I made my sister a matcha cake! πŸ’šπŸŽ‚

Hello, hi and hey to the people that brighten my day! (Cringe or no? πŸ˜‚). Recently my sister, Kate’s, birthday took place! I was so excited for it as I wanted to spoil her (with love of course, we try not to be materialistic but she does hint at wanting Dior πŸ˜… too bad, you’ll get what you’re given! 🀣) and one of the things I did that with was a homemade matcha cake! πŸŽ‚ I’d planned this since around April time and perhaps even before that and a few weeks before the big day I went to one of her fav cafes (that’s more of a truck) and bought a bag of matcha powder! The plan was to use two spoonfuls to make the cake and give the rest alongside her first ever matcha kit as a gift! 🎁

I had a matcha cake recipe saved to my phone and I knew there were two things that I wanted to change about it, one was that I didn’t want to put extra matcha in the icing to make that green as I wanted to keep that plain so it would be a surprise to her what the cake was on the inside! And the other thing was that I wanted to add strawberries because you can’t go wrong with a good fruity cake! πŸ“

Two days before Kate’s birthday I set to it on making the cake, knowing that I’d put it together, add the icing and decorate the next day. As per the recipe it involved folding whipped egg whites into an egg yolk mix and I think somewhere down the line I went a bit wrong and didn’t allow for much air to be incorporated so the cakes didnt rise that much but I was just happy that they maintained a green colour judging by the underneath of each of the layers (I baked two). I had been a bit worried as the cakes had both turned a bit golden when baking but the green colour underneath was a nice surprise and a hint of what the insides might be like!

As I mentioned above, I wanted it to be a secret that the cake was matcha inside so I just covered it in whipped cream that had slices of strawberries interwoven into it. I’m not a matcha girlie myself but even I was excited by this combination of green tea and strawberries! On the day that I filled in between the cakes with cream and then coated the outside I was so worried it wouldn’t hold as I hadn’t wanted to use buttercream because its not a favourite taste of my sister (I think the idea of eating butter gives her the ick 🀣).

Luckily the cream held and even with the strawberries mixed in it coated the cake well! My mum helped me spread it on and I was so happy with how it turned out! Next was the fun part, 24 hours later my sister got to see it! Her birthday was lovely and she really enjoyed herself, a part of the surprise was the cake and it went down as a hit! It didn’t overly taste of matcha, you could taste the strawberries more but it was very yummy and I’m glad I made it for my sis!

For a first attempt at a matcha cake I don’t think I did too bad! I don’t like matcha but even I enjoyed a slice because it didn’t really taste of it! Do you like matcha? I’m more of a chai latte person myself 😍.

I’ve gotta go now but I’m glad I got to capture this fun moment! I was planning on making the cake for so long, it feels strange that its over now 🀣. I’ll see you again next Saturday with another post but until then I hope you have a really good week, take care, stay safe and buh-bye πŸ˜ŠπŸ’—

  1. Happy belated birthday to your sister. I’ve never tried matcha anything before. The cake looks amazing. I have recently tried a pumpkin cream chai latte from Starbucks and I really liked it although I will say the cinnamon was a little over powering but I think that could be because I added the pumpkin cream to it so the next time I plan on just getting a plain chai latte.

    1. Thanks! Ooh pumpkin cream sounds so good!! They don’t do that over here but I have tried a pumpkin spice chai latte and I like that although I agree it overpowers the chai. I hope u enjoy your plain chai latte next time! 🀀

  2. Was just talking about chai latte and matcha in a cafe yesterday! I know chai tea and I’m assuming that a chai latte just has loads of milk with a little tea? But then they also had a dirty chai latte and can not think what that would be!
