Hi everyone! Happy Saint Patrick’s day! π Today I thought I’d share with you a list of my favourite Irish Musicians in order to celebrate it! I have also added a list of a couple other Irish acts at the end that have impacted my life because why not acknowledge them as well? π Where songs are mentioned I have linked them to the corresponding YouTube videos incase you like them too or have in fact never heard of some of them (it’s easy for me to assume everyone has as they play them on repeat over here π»π). I haven’t seen many of these videos before so its new to me as well! π Before I get into it I would like to link back to what I posted this time last year HERE in memory of my oldest sister George π. Okay here we go (There is a good lot to get through!).
Hozier
I remember getting Hoziers album on the day it came out and not being able to hide the huge grin on my face (and not really even trying to! π). As I left the store clutching the bag that held it, I had no idea at the time that I’d like the lesser known songs on the CD a whole lot more that the famously overplayed ones (*cough* Take Me To Church π). Jackie And Wilson is a song that I could both cry and smile along to at the same time, it is the epitome of crying because you’re happy. I remember the first time I saw it written on the back of the CD, I smiled thinking of Dexy’s Midnight Runner’s version of Jackie Wilson Said a song that also never failed to make me smile when I was little. I also love From Eden and Someone New!
Hudson Taylor
Hudson Taylor is a folk duo made up of brothers Harry and Alfie Hudson-Taylor (I have a whole new perspective on the word “folk” now I’ll tell you that! π)! Ahh I absolutely love them! I’d say they are best known for their song Chasing Rubies and then there’s World Without You…but these two aren’t the tunes that got me into Hudson Taylor, Feel It Again is!! π It’s breathtakingly beautiful. Most recently I’ve gotten into their newest song of the bunch Run With Me and the biggest news of all is that I’m going to see them on the 28th!!! π
Kodaline
Kodaline consists of four band members; Steve, Vinny, Jason and Mark and they have a very profound style. My sister went to see them live and from moments she captured on her camera their music touches in the exact same way and not many musicians can do that. Out of all of the songs I could choose I would have to say that Love Like This is my absolute favourite! I love how you can hear Steve Garrigan’s accent in their music as sometimes parts of peoples voices are easily hidden despite them singing aloud and they take on something completely different not even realizing what they’re doing but Kodaline stay true to who they are and where they’re from, using it to grow branching out from the music they started with yet keeping their original distinctive sound.
Gavin James
Gavin James was the support act alongside James Bay when my sister went to that Kodaline concert! I’m constantly humming Hearts On Fire to myself, a couple of times I’ve been singing it in my head and it’s come on the radio at the same time π΅ (but like I mentioned before the songs do get played on repeat over here! π).
Here’s a list of some other Irish Musicians that are AMAZING! I tried to say a little something about them all but firstly here are the few that I will just list:
Boyzone, Walking On Cars, The Boomtown Rats/Bob Geldof, Aslan, Little Green Cars, Sinead O’Connor, Two Door Cinema Club, The Riptide Movement and Van Morrison! (I would write about them but this post is already turning out to be longer than expected and you know how I go on! π).
Are you ready for this?..π
U2 – Whenever I think of U2 I’m reminded of a question about a speech Bono gave on an English paper in my leaving cert every single time! π (oh and a number of badges of theirs I might have collected when I was little ππ). They’re one of those bands that are just historic (someone will probably be annoyed because I put the “just” in there π). Beautiful Day is played a lot but it’s still a magnificent tune alongside I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and With or Without You, over those I would have to say that my favourite of theirs is One!! (I have linked the version they did with Mary J. Blige as it is incredible).
Bell X1 – Rocky Took A Lover was the only song I knew that I loved for a couple years of my life π it’s magical! I like Flame too.
The Academic – These are the newest of the bunch (this is the band my sister won tickets to go see/meet back in January) and already their unique sound is evident. My favourite song of theirs is Bear Claws!
Westlife – can’t not link World Of Our Own! ππ
Phil lynott / Thin Lizzy – When I think of Thin Lizzy I think of their version of Whiskey In The Jar and that is because it was one of the songs being played by my teacher in primary school (alongside a Paul Simon song) when I passed out and knocked my head which contributed massively to my health conditions (don’t worry the song doesn’t haunt me, I still love it! π). I also think of The Boys Are Back In Town as it was what I listened to a good lot of times on the way to my mum’s hospital appointments back then.
The script – ahhh what can be said about these guys?? I can’t just list one song I’d feel guilty for the others!! π I suppose in memory it all goes back to The Man Who Can’t Be Moved so I could let that song stand alone and speak for itself about how brilliant The Script are!…..but then I wouldn’t get to tell you about how Rain holds great memories of my holiday back over to England last year! π
Imelda May – I randomly bought one of Imelda May’s albums a couple of years ago knowing nothing but the sound of her voice and one song that she had covered (Tainted Love) and aside from some others that stayed in my mind I have never stopped listening to Inside Out π
Snow patrol – Classed as a Scottish/Irish band but I couldn’t leave them out! Run and Chasing Cars are two songs I always used to get mixed up with singing when I was little so can you imagine my relief to find out they were from the same band? For some time before that I thought there was some severe copying going on in the music industry π I might do a list of my favourite Scottish musicians too as going through my mp3 there seems to be quite a lot!
Paddy Casey – Saints & Sinners was a song my dad always used to play in the car so I grew up being a bit annoyed with it whilst still singing along to it π
Picture This – For a while I got confused between Hudson Taylor and Picture this before realizing who I liked more and yet I know more songs by Picture This ππ My favourites are Never Change and Take My Hand.
The coronas – The song that made me take proper notice of The Coronas was We Couldn’t Fake It it’s too beautiful (my dog Toby would probably not agree as I sing it to him! π¬π).
Niall Horan – all I can really say about him is that my sister’s friends met him the other day after winning tickets (how many times have I mentioned winning tickets this year!?? π). I love This Town!
Maverick Sabre – And last but not least there’s Maverick Sabre! He’s English/Irish in the same way as me in that he moved over here when he was little. I always just call myself British as that’s where I was born but I like how you can take on that description as I usually wouldn’t, even though I am part Irish and proud to call Ireland my home as it is all I know (despite not wanting it to be forever). When I was younger I never would have thought that Maverick Sabre grew up in Ireland in a part I am familiar with and that really inspired me. My favourites of his are two of his oldest; No One and Let Me Go
Thank you for reading! π You’re a star yourself if you got through that with me! ππ Do you like any Irish Musicians? Do we share favourites? Let me know π Slan go foill (goodbye for now!) β
I love The Script and Niall Horan[especially his song Flicker]
