My top 10 tips for tidying up!

Hi everyone! I hope you’re well and keeping warm as I don’t know about where you are but here in my part of Ireland it is absolutely FREEZING! ❄ I’ve heard that some of you have snow at the moment and no matter how much I was wishing for that, i don’t envy you! 😂 There is news of snow arriving in my area which has turned out to be a flood so far and that just reminds me of how terrible things are when the snow melts out here so my mind has changed a bit! 🙈 Why can’t snow just mean good things!? 😓😂

Anywho! 😂 Back when I Revisited my Autumn bucket list I mentioned that I have been tidying up a part of my room every other day after trying to do it everyday but not realizing how much it would affect various flare-ups. If I was well and able I would have tidied it all in one go (sometimes I try which is not good judgment on my part 🙈😂) but seeing as I have to pace I have come up with my top 10 tips that I hope are of help so here we go!

Make your bed first! 🛏

A bed is usually the biggest piece of furniture in a bedroom and so making it look neat will make a clean space the first thing you see upon entering your room. This will motivate you to keep going and decide where to clean up next (fingers crossed anyway! 😂). Also, try not to let stuff pile up on your bed whilst you tidy as it needs to stay that clean space to work around! Or else later when you go to bed there won’t be a bed to sleep on! 😴😂

Plan!

Know what you’re going to do before you start and try to stick to a plan! Otherwise you will be overwhelmed by what you have to tackle and will not really get anything done. I went up to tidy half of one of my bookcases the other day and I ended up cleaning out my entire wardrobe 😕 don’t ask! 😂 Okay so this is good because at least I got something done but at the same time it wasn’t what I set out to do. I payed for it in the end as I spent overtime tidying which resulted in pain so it’s really important to not only tell yourself what to do but to also keep going in that direction.

Don’t make a rash decision about what you’re getting rid of!

If you can’t decide whether or not you should keep something don’t force yourself to decide in that moment, put whatever it is aside and come back to it later before you stop tidying. Time is wasted trying to figure out if you want it or not so just remember that no one is forcing you to make the decision in a minute, stay calm and don’t get stressed, maybe once all the clutter you don’t need is gone there will be room to house the things that you want but are unsure of keeping (meaning there will be extra time to think it through once the cleaning has been completed and is out of the way! 😂).

Give to charity! (Don’t only throw away!)

Sometimes it helps to know that the things you don’t want to throw away (but really should) will be put to good use with someone who will actually appreciate and use them! Giving your stuff away to a charity shop is better than putting stuff in the bin just because you don’t want it anymore 😂 of course remember that not everything can be given to a new home so make sure whatever it is isn’t broken and can actually be used by someone else (don’t give half a notebook…what am I saying, who would get rid of a precious notebook!? 😓😂).

Time yourself! ⏳

Tell yourself a time that you will step away from the work before you start and don’t go over it! (Or under but I tend to keep going so I want to highlight that I shouldn’t be doing that! 🙈😂).

Don’t get distracted!

I know it’s difficult not to open a book as soon as you pick it up 😂 but time will soon fly by before you remember what it is you’re supposed to actually be doing and you will be disappointed with yourself for not keeping focused! Of course reading isn’t a waste of time 😏 but it ruins the progress you’ve made/are about to make on tidying up!

Put music on/work in complete silence!

I prefer to tidy like I study, in silence! 😂 Because then I can focus entirely on the job at hand. I used to put the radio on as I found that kept me awake and less likely to dawdle and not get anything done. Figure out what works for you and hopefully it will be a form of motivation throughout. Having the radio on may help you to feel less disconnected from the outside world whilst your surrounded by the job at hand in your room or it might be a complete distraction so it’s good to know the difference beforehand! 😂

Take breaks!

Although this is difficult to believe when you’re pulled away from tidying: breaks are the most important thing you can do whilst tidying up! They fuel what you’re able to do and without them your work is worthless as you’re using up energy that you don’t have. I find it annoying having to stop what I’m doing when I’m on a roll and actually able to tidy (someone usually has to come stop me to have a break 🙈😂) but I admit that the time away allows me to build myself back up whether it’s to tidy later on or days after!

Stay hydrated!

Keep water by your side and every so often make sure you drink some! Set yourself a challenge of drinking a certain amount in the time you’re busy too! ⏱

Do a small part each day, like me!

Tidying shouldn’t take up every second of the day and as much as you want it to be done now all that matters is that you’ve made a start on it! Dedicate a portion of your day to a section of your room and know that it’s okay to stop if you find it’s taking you longer than you anticipated or is a bigger mess than you thought 😌 that just means you have to make a better plan for next time and not give up on it!

Thank you for reading! 😉❤ Are there any tips I left out? Let me know, I need all the help I can get to finish tidying my room 😂 (preferably a servant 😏😂) have a lovely day!
